The third distribution of profits from salt sales took place in October 2016. The farmers have requested that the funds be shared before major temple festivals - always a heavy expense for Balinese families. In Les this year, the Pura Bale Agung temple was the site of a very large celebration, and the Rp 300,000 (US$25) each that we distributed went a long way in helping to offset offering costs.
Previously, in July 2016, Rp 7,000,000 ($650) was distributed to the group so that they could start their own legal cooperative called Tasik Segara Lestari. It is now in the final stages of legalization. More to come on this, when the cooperative becomes a reality!
With donations from Nicki McFarlane, Evie Hatch and Ganesha Bookshop’s BOOKS FOR BALI program, we are starting to have reading hour with the primary school children in Les. BOOKS FOR BALI’s books are bilingual, so the children are also learning a bit of English at the same time. Not to mention that they then use the pictures in the books to make drawings. This is so heartening to see kids picking up books on their own and reading them. May they turn into readers! Thanks to everyone for contributing and more books are welcome! You can donate via Ganesha Books bookshop in Ubud and Sanur. If you are overseas, please contact Ganesha Books via their website: www.ganeshabooksbali.com |
